not really thrilled by this. jon hamm isn’t actually a very good actor and pretty much all the characters are abhorrent and (worse) difficult to root for. typically the audience will like a character who is at least good at something. so, i should theoretically like don draper on some level because he is a good ad man. what does it say about me that i hold advertising people in lower esteem than gangsters and meth dealers? well, i do. if this whole ad agency went up in flames i think the fictional mad men world would be a much better place for it.

the sets and art direction are obvious strong points, but not enough to keep me interested over the course of an hour long show. at this point i’m sticking it out because i like to see where these big tv programs go. will it putter out and outstay its welcome? will they actually try to say something with their final season? will they pull off some believable amount of growth for these characters?
