Reviewit’s interesting when a film takes a situation that could easily go in either direction (comedy or drama) and it walks the line. there are parts of this film that are haunting and/or depressing and there are parts that are laugh out loud funny. depending upon your interpretation or the execution, some individual scenes could go either way.
the two male leads are well matched because they’re two guys who can play a role sad or funny with equal ability. john c. reilly in particular has the ability to be the lovable loser that breaks your heard or makes you laugh your ass off, with boogie nights being the greatest example of this.
the camerawork was excessive, but not as bad as i was expecting since both meryl’s mom and my dad thought it was obnoxious.
