Doubt
Year: 2008
Grade: B+
Country: USA
Director: Shanley
Reviewbetter than i expected from a film made as much for the academy as anyone else. it’s got big time actors, a star editor, casting director, cinematographer and composer…all of whom i’m pretty sure have been involved with academy nominated films in the past. all three of the stars did fine jobs with the roles, but the real star is the writing. shanley does a good job of leaving the doubt as perfectly centered between streep and hoffman as possible. in this way there is some artifice to the film – it’s a purposefully ignorant omniscient point of view that we get. i suppose some could be bothered by this, but it’s just part of the fun. a good conversation film.
