Cimarron
Year: 1931
Grade: B+
Country: USA
Director: Ruggles
Review1931 best picture winner which is also the first western to receive a best picture win. it’s basically a cross between birth of a nation and there will be blood. it also happens to be more entertaining and watchable than either. birth of a nation is more important and there will be blood is more overrated. cimarron is the kind of film that has somehow slipped through the cracks a bit, but should be considered an early classic. it’s a great early western that establishes a lot of the genre themes of the untamed west, burgeoning cities, lawlessness, cowboys vs. indians (in a surprisingly balanced way), etc. i wouldn’t have voted it the best picture of the year, but it may have been the best american film of the year.
