Reviewa classic film about the difference of the sexes and relationships. i don’t consider it a classic in the chris miller canon, but it is a classic in the larger, societal canon and i can recognize its place. ryan and crystal are good together – they’re funny, they have a decent chemistry – and nora ephron’s (you’ve got mail, sleepless in seattle, etc.) writing is as good here as it is in any other film of hers. sonnenfeld does the cinematography, but i didn’t notice any brilliance in that category. it seemed he actually used a lot less wide angle lens work than he has in the past, but i can’t be sure. it has a decent balance of comedy and drama and that is always critical in a film, especially a romantic comedy.
