a fun family adventure film. it’s hard to be objective about such things, but i really don’t think that kids growing up now have the equivalent of “the princess bride,” which was the adventure film of my childhood. a series of unfortunate events sort of tries to be like the neverending story or the princess bride, but just doesn’t quite get there for me. it’s a charming and funny film, no doubt, but it doesn’t have whatever the princess bride has – magic, or whatever you want to call it.
