reminded me most of larry clark’s “bully,” but this was better. clark did a great job with “kids” but bully felt so unnatural and the acting was uniformly bad. mean creek had only a couple moments of bad acting, though those couple moments were critical – it’s amazing what one or two bad shots can do. this kind of film has been done before so it’s really just a question of how well this one did it. i thought it did a really good job up to a point and then it started to drag its feet a bit. there were certain elements here for a really good film, but it could have used a rewrite and a couple extra days of reshooting.
