heart-felt documentary from the same director as ‘hoop dreams’ (can’t wait for that to be on dvd). this one isn’t as good, but it has just as much humanity as hoop dreams. it’s mostly darker (though oddly it’s about white people, whereas hoop dreams is about mostly blacks), and doesn’t leave much hope by the end of the film, but sometimes that’s life i guess. a fine film which ramps up the drama slowly and effectively. the dvd has a commentary track that is probably good.
