seems like a movie welles would have made before citizen kane. it has a similar visual style, theme and story, but isn’t as well produced. part of the problem is the poor quality of the film transfer, but part of it is the poor quality of the production in general. it’s a good film on paper, but none of the acting is very good and there isn’t glue holding the thing together like there is in citizen kane. in absolute terms it’s a decent flick, but relative to what welles did a decade earlier, this is sad.
