a fine film indeed, but not a masterpiece upon first viewing. don’t get me wrong – this is a finely crafted film on all sorts of levels…the plot, characterization, acting, use dreams and metaphor were all well done. certainly a great piece of craftsmanship and although it did strike me emotionally it didn’t have the unclassifiable magic that something like magnolia does.
